Christmas reflections Part TWO 2018

One of my favorite memories of Christmas morning happens to be one of our funniest. To give a little background, my dad built the home I was raised in from probably 1 yr old until I was married. The “latest” thing was to put radiating heat in the ceiling to supplement heat in your house when it was really cold. We only turned that on when it was well below freezing. Now on to the story.

My brothers shared a room for several years and early on had bunk beds. Mark, my oldest brother, slept on the top bunk. This particular Christmas Eve, the temps were well below freezing so during the night, my Dad went around to each room and turned that heat on. Now, remember it radiates from the ceiling. Mark is sleeping on the top bunk.

When the first light filtered through the window, Douglas Edday, my other brother, and I were up waking up everyone, ready to go downstairs to the basement (read yesterday’s post for an explanation of that) to open gifts. Mark came down the ladder slowly and called out to Mom and Dad. Much to my dismay, I overheard him say, “I am sick! I have a fever. I woke up so hot and am sweating and am so sick! My pajamas are soaking wet from sweat! I am sick!!” My first thought was, “Oh no! This gift opening thing is going to be delayed!” (Selfish- I know! But I was only 8 so give me a break already! 😁 ) I remember my Mom and Dad standing in the hall looking concerned. My Mom reached out and felt his head and then the weirdest thing happened...my Dad started chuckling. His shoulders began to shake and then he began to laugh. We all stood there and stared at him wondering what on earth was happening. Finally, when he regained his composure, he explained that he had turned that heat on in the middle of the night and, since Mark was on the top bunk, it was as if he was in an oven right under the burner. The giggling and laughter that ensued was a memory that I will never forget.

Of course, I was relieved more than them all because that meant that the present opening could resume!
So my wish for you today is that your Christmas season be filled with laughter and giggles shared with family and friends.
